Group Chaplaincy: Showing Up for Queer Kids

Showing Up for Queer Kids
Fridays, March 8th - April 12th
1 - 2:30 pm ET

Program description

This virtual program is for anyone seeking to better support and protect the queer kids in their lives. This group setting, facilitated by trained chaplain Taylor Buehler, will provide space where folks can listen and be listened to without the typical barriers that we often find when we want to share something difficult, nuanced, fluid or beyond words.

Together we’ll consider questions like: What have you encountered within yourself when showing up for trans youth in your lives? What have your challenges been? Highlights? Hopes? Are there any feelings that you feel alone in or shame around?

This program is for you if you’re:
- a parent
- a caregiver
- a teacher
- an adult with kids in your life

More Info

Literary chaplaincy is inspired by traditional chaplaincy, but with the use of secular texts, not religious ones. We take the stories already at the center of your life and, through rigor and intention, help you discover their power to guide you as personal sacred texts.

Using this model, an intimate group of 6-8 participants will dig deep into the work of taking care of oneself as you learn to better take care of the people around you.

A typical session will consist of an opening reading. Then one person will speak, followed by time for reflections and wonderings from the group. Then we will have journaling time, followed by another personal offering, reflection, and journaling.

What is Literary Chaplaincy?

Literary Chaplaincy is a support service developed by Vanessa Zoltan. Inspired by traditional chaplaincy, literary chaplains listen with the care of a good friend, but with the remove and fresh perspective only a well-trained counselor can provide. They approach your concerns with an open heart, asking clarifying and probing questions to help you find resolution about complex dilemmas. Where traditional chaplaincy would use a religious text, literary chaplaincy uses secular books, demonstrating their sacred power by applying sacred reading practices to them.
