Discovering Your Own Patron Saints: A Guided Workshop with Nathalie Folkerts

Starting June 23rd, you’re invited to join Nathalie Folkerts for six evenings dedicated to discovering your very own patron saints.

The first week, we'll explore together what we mean by "patron saints" and discuss how characters might support us in living into our values. Then, each subsequent week will be devoted to a different value: wonder, imagination, grief, and courage. We will spend the first half of each class reflecting on the week's value and the beloved characters in our own lives who embody them. In this way, we'll make space to discover the characters who have jumped off the page and made their way into the moral fabric of our lives. Then, during the second half of each class, Nathalie will offer participants a range of spiritual practices to engage their chosen patron saints, from chanting, to sacred reading practices, to guided visualizations, to ritual design.

Pilgrims will visit Haworth, where the Brontës grew up, and the Brontë Parsonage Museum, walking in the sisters’ footsteps as they contemplate their legacy.

Sacred Practices with Jane Austen

This autumn, join Margaret H. Willison (beloved Not Sorry faculty member and life-long Austen devotee) for six weeks of sacred reading in community focused on the works of Jane Austen. Following the pattern set by our successful Sacred Practices with Harry Potter course, Margaret will guide participants in this class through all six of Jane Austen’s novels (one per session) employing a variety of sacred reading tools. While familiarity with Austen’s novels, sacred practices, or both will be helpful to participants, neither is required. If you’ve never read Mansfield Park or heard of “floralegium,” you’re still welcome here: this class is about developing the muscle of sacred practice and building community, so your only necessary prerequisites are a warm heart and an open mind.

In November, you’ll write that 50,000-word romance novel! Along the way, you’ll explore what you find sexy, investigate what you value in relationships, and uncover new depths of your creativity. November will be filled with encouragement and support from your writing group, as well as guidance, tips, and tricks to keep you on pace for this writing sprint.
